01 / INFORMATION

Thermal runaway and associated hazards

01

Thermal

Cell failure can lead to fire or explosion.

02

Chemical

Electrolytes and fire byproducts can present chemical hazards.

03

Electrical

Stored electrical energy is an additional hazard.

OSHA describes thermal runaway as a chain reaction in which heat from a failing cell damages nearby cells. It identifies manufacturing defects, mechanical damage, temperature extremes and improper charging as possible initiating factors.

Current EV response research

In its August 4, 2026 release, UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute identifies water from a standard handline as its first-choice EV suppression tactic and states that added suppression agents are not required. Its guidance also addresses protective equipment, toxic exposures and persistent reignition risk.

This is EV incident guidance. It does not establish approval or test results for any Redline or Thermal Mountain product.

Workplace planning

OSHA’s control guidance includes following battery manufacturers’ instructions, assessing hazards, using appropriate protective equipment, developing emergency procedures and training personnel. Its recommendations also cover storage and disposal practices.
